Two separate Sunday School classes, the “Shining Sheep” and the “Empowered Eagles”, are available for children three years old through 5th grade during the worship service. Children are invited to join us in the Education Building following Children's Time or as indicated in the Bulletin.
Our young Sunday School class is called the “Shining Sheep”. This class serves children ages 3 years to until they finish kindergarten. Their class includes Bible stories, activities, crafts, songs, prayers, and free play. This class is taught by Sally Johnson.
The “Empowered Eagles” is our older Sunday School class that serves children from 1st – 5th grades. This Sunday School class is currently using the Sparkhouse Lectionary Curriculum. This program is a wonderful opportunity for children to enjoy themselves while experiencing the same weekly lectionary message that is being shared with their parents during worship. We incorporate many types of learning activities to account for a variety of learning styles - art, music, science/food, movement/games, and drama are all used during different classes to illustrate the weekly scripture. One advantage of using a lectionary based Sunday School program is that children and adults hear the same message – it gives families the opportunity to discuss what they learned at church.
GSUCC has five dedicated Sunday School teachers, Kate Yuska, Lisa Mead, Debra and Chris Buchanan, and Annie Buchanan, who lead the older children's class once per month. These nurturing and caring individuals are committed to teaching strong Christian principles and sharing God's love with our children. GSUCC believes it is important for our Sunday School to show the children how God's word makes a difference in our everyday lives. It is also important to show how God's teachings are relevant to children and their interactions with the world.
During the fifth Sundays of the month, the worship service will be an engaging intergenerational service that will be meaningful for all ages. Children will remain in the sanctuary for the entire service instead of attending Sunday School class. The monthly themes and music of Sunday School will be incorporated into these services.
Good Shepherd UCC is a “safe-church”. This means we follow specific guidelines to ensure the protection and well-being of all our children during church services and church activities. These guidelines are used during children's Sunday School. Click here to view our safe-church policy.
