The Deacons Ministry constitutes the lay ministry of the church and is elected by the church membership to represent Christ and His Church by encouraging and enabling spiritual growth for people of all ages; by assisting in meeting the pastoral needs of our members and friends of our church; and by welcoming and integrating new people into our life and ministry. Deacons characteristically attend worship services regularly, sincerely care for others and have a keen interest in the spiritual growth of the church.
The primary responsibility of the Deacons is to assist our ministers in promoting the fellowship and spiritual life of our church through the "Shepherd's Program" wherein each Deacon is assigned to a portion of our church membership to nurture as appropriate, sharing in their joys and concerns, and to advise our ministers regarding the spiritual needs of our members.
Routine responsibilities of the Deacons Ministry include:
- preparing the altar for weekly and special worship services;
- ensuring the sanctuary is properly set-up each week;
- decorating the sanctuary for special occasions;
- providing banners, as appropriate;
- ensuring ushers are trained and available as needed;
- providing for and assisting in the administration of the elements of Holy Communion;
- assisting our ministers in baptism ceremonies and the reception of new members;
- ensuring acolytes are trained and available for worship service each week;
- providing special bulletins appropriate for our children;
- promoting a recycling program for used bulletins;
- ensuring a well-child nursery is available as needed; and
- preparing informational packets for our new members.
The Deacons Ministry routinely meets once a month with our ministers to discuss ways in which to lead our congregation into a deeper understanding and appreciation of the nature and mission of our church, and to better meet the spiritual needs of its members.
