Good Shepherd United Church of Christ tries very hard to be an active, engaged family of faith. As part of this goal, we attempt to offer our members, friends and guests a wide range of activities to experience, that will help build and reflect our Christian faith.
From special worship events and community service activites, to family-oriented entertainment, our goal is to provide a cross-section of calendar items so that there is "something for everyone."
We hope you'll visit our Photo Section frequently for a closer look at some of things we've been up to lately (as well as some occasional visits back into our archives!).
One of the sure signs of the Christmas season at Good Shepherd UCC comes with our annual “Hanging Of The Greens.” For the past few years our Intergenerational Sunday School, Youth Group and Deacons have teamed up to decorate the sanctuary for the Christmas season.
That means pulling the tree from the attic, getting out the decorations, marveling at the ornaments we’ve collected over the years, plotting the strategy to get the church decorated in less than 2 hours and then … rolling up our sleeves to accomplish the mission. Sounds like what a lot of families go through, doesn’t it? Here’s a look at what the sanctuary is looking like these days.
Every Thanksgiving since 2004, members, their families and friends have enjoyed a delicious pot luck turkey dinner at the church. The tradition began when one of our members, Gayle Merrill, observed that many members of our church family spent this special holiday away from other family members. She suggested that the church establish an event that would attract people who were looking for others to share a meal with, as well as members whose families were visiting from elsewhere. It’s now our Thanksgiving tradition, generally with around 50 people attending each year.
As with all good churches, music is a very big part of life at Good Shepherd. In addition to our great choir led by director Carla Gleason, fabulous praise team under the guidance of Chris Alberti and our outstanding organist Linda Velto, we are often blessed with special music presentations.
One regular "theme" is the collection of chorales that perform throughout the year. We thought you'd enjoy seeing members of children's, men's and women's chorales from the past year or so.
Members of GSUCC and our sister churches, Cary First Christian Church and Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, joined together on our bi-annual Appalachian Service Project trip to West Virginia. 32 members from the three churches worked and fellowshipped together during this special week. The Mission Team refurbished the exterior of a deteriorating two-story house for an elderly woman and framed walls and built roof trusses for a man whose home had burned down. Here is a photo collection of some of the many highlights and more coverage of this very memorable activity.
