- Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church Read More
Plans are progressing for Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church (GSPC) to begin leasing space from GSUCC. GSPC's
first worship service in our facilities is scheduled to be Sunday, August 8. They will be using our main
building and classrooms on Sunday afternoons beginning at 1 p.m. They will also use the main building on
Tuesday through Saturday mornings for prayer sessions until approximately 8 a.m., and for a worship service on
Thursday evening. They will use the Library until noon on Saturdays. With additional use of our buildings, it
is essential that all requests for scheduling meetings be coordinated with Mary Horn in the church office at
secretary@gsucc.org or 481-1441.
Reaching this point in our relationship with GSPC is a milestone in a long process. Thanks to everyone who
has had a part in making this a successful transition and for continued cooperation as we share our facilities
and help a relatively new church in getting established.

- The Lion King Comes to Durham Read More
The Lion King is one of the most creative and inspiring musicals ever to come to the Broadway stage!
And now you have an incredible, one-time opportunity to see The Lion King when it comes to our own Durham
Performing Arts Center (DPAC) this January. Tickets go on sale to the general public on October 2. But
Good Shepherd UCC has already reserved 75 tickets for some of the very best seats in the house. That's
right-for our "Let's Go" activity in January, we have reserved 75 prime seats for the performance at
7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18. The seats we have are in the second, third, fourth, and fifth rows
of the Center Section of the Front Balcony-you could not possibly ask for a better view of this stunning
production!
What's more, you will not only get a 10% discount on your tickets, you will also avoid the normal $5.50
per ticket handling fee (there is a built-in group ticket charge of $1.25 per ticket). We have arranged
a special Tuesday night Group Price of only $46.50 per ticket! Can you imagine a better Christmas gift
for family or friends?
Originally, we reserved 50 seats, but as of July 25, 59 seats had already been requested. Our friends
at DPAC have managed to hold another 25 tickets for us in the same block of seats so we can all be
together. Remember, though, you must sign up for your tickets no later than Sunday, August 15. Please
avoid disappoint-ment by signing up right away. No refunds will be available unless we can find someone
else to buy your tickets.
Payment for tickets must be by check made out to Good Shepherd with "Lion King" written in the memo
section. Payment is due when you make your reservation, but if you need to make multiple payments,
that can be arranged with Pat Russell.
The Lion King is perfect entertainment for all ages! We hope that you'll join your family and friends
from Good Shepherd for a night at the theater that you will never forget!

- Worship Notes Read More
You will want to be at Good Shepherd each Sunday in August, not only to be renewed by some spiritually
refreshing worship experiences, but also to vote each week for your favorite hymns. Favorite Hymn Month
begins September 12 on Kick-Off Sunday. Here is what else you can look forward to:
10:30 A.M. Sunday, August 1 - Be on hand when Pat begins a new sermon series with From Pat's
China Journal: On the Nature of Reflection. What are some of the results you might expect if you make
reflection an important part of your life? Primary scripture will be Mark 10:17.22. Claire Jenkins
will lead A Time with Our Children, and Communion will be served by distribution. You are invited to
wear casual clothes to this service. Immediately following worship, we will have a quick hot dog lunch
and then begin straightening up the church in preparation for the arrival of Good Shepherd Presbyterian
on August 8.
10:30 a.m. Sunday, August 8 - Pat shares the second sermon based on insights from his sabbatical
in China with From Pat's China Journal: One Sign of Spiritual Maturity. This time Pat will reflect on
some of the insights he gained from Taoist Master Li at the Green Ram Temple in Chengdu. The primary
scripture for the day will be Ruth 1:6.18.
10:30 a.m. Sunday, August 15 - It's the third Sunday of the month, so it's time for our monthly
Praise Service. Pat will present his Summer Re-run for August: A Time to Love based on Ecclesiastes
3:1.8 and I John 4:7.11 and 16.21. Communion will be served by Intinction. And get set to hear a
very special announcement from Pat during this morning's worship. Here's a clue: It will probably
happen in October. And this is the last day to make your reservations to see The Lion King at DPAC
in January.
10:30 a.m. Sunday, August 22 - Pat concludes his August sermon series with a sermon titled From
Pat's China Journal: My Way or the Highway. Folks in China and most eastern countries have a different
attitude than we do about other faith communities and traditions. Is there a lesson to be learned from
our eastern brothers and sisters? Primary scriptures for the day will be Luke 14:7.11 and Matthew 7:15.23.
10:30 a.m. Sunday, August 29 - The members of our sister congregation, Cary First Christian Church,
will be our guests for worship and for a potluck lunch that day. Our guest speaker that morning will come
from Cary First. Be with us for an exciting time of worship and fellowship, and please bring a couple of
dishes to share. Fellowship Ministry will provide drinks and table service.

Where All Are Welcome
|
|
Welcome to Good Shepherd United Church of Christ (UCC). Good Shepherd is young, just twenty years old in 2007. We love the diversity that thrives within this community of faith. Good Shepherd is a church for people of all ethnic and racial backgrounds. We've got folks of all ages - people with a wide range of religious and political views. We have a healthy mix of couples, families and singles. Folks often say that Good Shepherd feels like "family," and it's a place where You can belong. We believe that it is not necessary to be of one mind for us to be of one faith. We thank God that we are able to walk this spiritual journey together, and we invite You to join with us. We'll allow You to be Yourself, and we will encourage You to grow.

Good Shepherd offers a wide variety of classes and programs for children, youth, and adults. We're not afraid to try something new. You might enjoy our Intergenerational Class on Sunday mornings where teens and adults have a chance to learn from each other. Our Munchies and a Movie series presents a quality feature film each month, followed by a brief discussion.
We honor our children and try to make Good Shepherd a safe place for them and for all people. We've got a great new children's Christian Education program, and the teachers, kids and parents all love it! Most Sundays there's a children's sermon. All children are invited to receive Communion with us at least twice a month, with their parents' approval. Our nursery is staffed by two experienced, caring child care professionals.
Our worship music ranges from traditional to contemporary. Pastor Patrick Russell gives sermons that are practical, down-to-earth, and grounded in Christian scripture. We are proud to be part of the United Church of Christ (UCC), and we have a strong commitment to mission. We contribute to God's mission around the world and participate locally in programs that include The Carying Place, Alliance Medical Mission, Habitat for Humanity, and others. We also sponsor a Mission Trip for teens and adults every other year. Our members are glad to roll up their sleeves and help out in any way they can.
Our congregation includes people from a wide variety of religious traditions. We know that Good Shepherd is not the church for everyone. But perhaps this is the church for You. Please try visiting us for three or four Sundays, and find out for Yourself. We'd feel honored to welcome You "home."
