October 14 – Old Wine in New Skins Concert
Come hear a concert of favorite hymn and biblical texts in new settings! “Old Wine in New Skins” will be presented at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church on Sunday, October 14, at 4:00 p.m. Led by ethnomusicologist/composer Dr. Abe Caceres, the concert includes local artists and a mass choir with singers from at least six area churches.
Good Shepherd will be represented by several singers! The program opens with two mass choir selections: This is the Day, and I Am Available to You, O Lord. It closes with the final mass choir selection, El Bautismo. This exciting Afro-Latin setting recounts the story and meaning of baptism and includes dance movements for the congregation. An East-West fusion of In Christ There is No East or West is scored for Chinese gongs, flute and organ. The Church’s One Foundation is set as a Puerto Rican danza. Youth and the young at heart will have the opportunity to dance the Jamaican limbo!
The concert is free; a freewill offering will be gathered to support the American Kidney Fund (AKF). Kidney disease affects 30 million Americans, and many related costs are not covered by insurance. The AKF provides prevention outreach, top-rated health educational resources, and direct financial assistance for patients to access lifesaving medical care, including dialysis and transplantation. For more information visit www.KidneyFund.org.
The program will be an ecumenical, intergenerational, cross-cultural musical party with audience participation! Come listen! Come sing! Come dance! Come be part of the fun! Come experience favorite hymn and Bible texts in “new skins!”
